Page 1: Project information

Thank you for your interest in this research project. The project (2023-2025) is funded by the Nuffield Foundation and the research team is made up of Dr Sarah Earle and Dr Stuart Read who are based at Bath Spa University, and Prof. Lynne Bianchi and Dr Julie Jordan who are based at the University of Manchester.

What is the research project about?

The purpose of this research is to better understand the place and purpose of practical work in primary science across the UK. The research will consider literature, a sector-wide survey and teacher interviews, in order to make recommendations that can be applied across the UK.

What would my involvement mean for me?

We are currently conducting this online survey. We welcome all primary science stakeholders to respond to the survey, including current teachers, senior leaders, professional development leads, STEM organisations and initial teacher educators in each of the UK nations.

The survey will ask for your thoughts and experiences regarding practical work in primary science. The survey will last for up approximately 15-20 minutes. At the end of the survey you will have the option to provide your email address if you wish to be contacted about being involved in the interview phase of the research.

What will happen to the information I provide?

Your survey responses will be stored securely in university password-protected storage. The full set of responses you provide will only be viewed and analysed by the project team.

Can I change my mind about participating?

You will be able to stop your involvement at any time without penalty and without having to give a reason. To do this, you are free to simply leave the survey and your data will be deleted at this stage. If you would like your data to be withdrawn once you have completed the survey, please do not hesitate to contact Sarah Earle or Lynne Bianchi (details below). However, due to the anonymity of the survey, withdrawal of your data may not be possible. Also, please note that withdrawal of data will only be feasible up to the point of data analysis.

Do you have permission to conduct this research project?

Ethical approval for this research project has been granted by the School of Education Research Ethics Committee, Bath Spa University.
